I knew Hyundai was a Korean company, but Samsung really threw me for a loop! Before today, the picture in my head of Korea was very much like my picture of Vietnam and I never used to think it was anywhere I would want to visit. Between the lectures and the readings, that's all changed. I'm already brainstorming ways to incorporate my newfound knowledge and richer understanding into my classroom. I'm so happy that the CA State Standards give us some leeway on area studies, and "East Asia" is among the areas! I also appreciated the resources from the Korean Cultural Center. Sometimes in my class we play little trivia games and the winning team gets candy. No more well-known American candy for them...I'm going to make a trip to an Asian market and get some Korean Moonpies now!

I'm thinking of a Socratic Seminar / "Expert Panel Discussion" between Capitalist and Communist and why their respective systems are best! Using this as a wrap up activity with students being assigned roles on each side after we discuss Korean History.

OR... Idea #2: Elizabeth actually brought up a good point as well. The United States's is a key model of economics and democracy i Korea. Another discussion/debate/socratic seminar would be to dive into that influence on Korea..or even across East Asia.
The very socioeconic changes and creation of new standards of living in both Japan and Korea could open up to some interesting debates. For example, keeping up with the Jones's with new washing machines, refridgerators, cars, televisions, etc and this new social phenomonem would be a great topic! What about true democracy?? How has it influenced the people? Politics? Daily Life? Policy???

These are just a few ideas that I'm playing with, let me know what youy think! =:O 😀 😛

Professor Jung-Kim delivered an excellent presentation and helped me to better understand the modern history of South Korea. It was ironic that the release of the two journalists were released from North Korea on the same day; it did add to the relevancy of the information she shared regarding the politics and economics of the area. I also appreciated her enthusiasm for Korea and generosity by giving us a piece of Koran culture.
