From the Dressing Room to Center Stage: Glimpses behind the Kabuki Curtain
September 22, 2015
4:15 PM to 6:15 PM
In this unique event, kabuki actor Nakamura Gankyō will give us a glimpse into the hidden world of kabuki. He will perform highlights from the kabuki dance “Echigo Jishi” (Echigo Lion Dance), share his knowledge about kabuki, demonstrate the techniques female-role actors use to make themselves up, and talk about his experiences as an actor. He will be joined by Kineya Yasoyo and Katada Kikusa, masters in Nagauta-style singing and drumming.

Kabuki Performance Workshop
October 16, 2015
-- to 11:59 PM
A kabuki performance workshop with Laurence Kominz (Portland State University).
Students will experience various aspects of kabuki performance: we will begin the physical creation of role types: townsman, samurai, samurai superhero (aragoto), princess. We will then do seated vocal work for these roles, and a short sung passage (ôzatsuma). Dance is central to kabuki movement, and students will learn a sword-fight dance routine (tachimawari/tate) and a short buyô geisha dance. The workshop culminates with an aragoto routine, combining rigorous movement, several mie poses, and vocalization by the performer.
