GuestI wonder if we know yet how we will be getting from Bejiing to Chongqing? I wonder if we will fly? If not, I hope that the high speed train that Steven found will be the one for us! Reading his post inspired me to investigate a bit more on the weather and sites in "the furnace city"; Chongqing. While the weather sounds positively daunting and alarming, the choices of going on a Yangtze River Cruise, or a visit to the Wushan Three Little Gorges or to the Furong Cave or Snow Jade Cave provide a lighter aspect that I hope we will be able to take advantage of while visiting this city.

GuestI just watched a BBC OUR WORLD documentary on Chongqing called: China's Unknown Mega City; Chongqing. You can find it on You Tube. Introduces Mr. Bo Xilai and his great efforts to combat the mafia corruption. I know things have changed since this was made as I believe it was made in 2010- but it is still a good look into the ciy.

KeymasterI was curious about how we would get from Beijing to Chongqing. So I started looking online and found out there is a train that goes from Beijing to Chongqing. Normally, these trains take anywhere from 25-32 hours and yes, they do have sleeper cars. But I also discovered a 16 hour fast train that travels at night from Beijing to Chongqing. These trains come in a lot of varieties, and they even have amenities like a tv screen for each bunk bed, little white slippers for travelers (don't worry, no foot-binding required), and unlimited free hot water in a pot. Could this be how we'll travel to Chongqing? I do know this: Chongqing has been described as a boiling hot, polluted, 32-million person megalopolis that is the fastest growing urban center on the planet. It should be fun.

GuestI recently traveled to Chongqing from Beijing in June of 2010. We took a domestic flight (which sounds strange) that didn't take very long. I didn't experience any furnace-like weather. On the contrary, the weather was similar to the foggy weather one experiences in San Francisco. It is a mountainous region that is often referred to as the "foggy city". Not once did we see the sun during our 4 days in Chongqing, although we did get some rain one afternoon. And yes, we did experience an excellent dinner cruise on the Yangtze River. We also visited the Three Gorges Museum while in Chongqing but did not have the opportunity to stop by the Three Gorges Dam. There is an excellent news special by Ted Koppel on Chongqing and the many changes taking place in this historic and interesting city that I highly recommend. I look forward to my return to Chongqing, which by the way is a municipality under the direct control of the Chinese government, with its delicious spicy food.
