After hearing from Captain Wells, about this lost piece of history, I begin wondering how much has been lost to us. His book, uses mostly primary sources which to me makes his book an important historical tool for anyone who wishes to learned more about the U.S. and China's early trading history. I once took an entirely course on the Civil War, and there was no mention at all of Lincoln authorizing the 4 ships right before he was assassinated. President Lincoln did something significant for the global economy and there is no mention of it in a lot of places.

I saw this post on Yahoo.com news about 2 weeks ago, and I have been meaning to share it ever since. The title reads, " Why is Katy Perry's Sunflower Dress Causing a Ruckus?
In the article, they mentioned that Katy has become an accidental political activist. She gave a concert in Taiwan, wearing a sunflower dress, which in that country it was used as a symbol against an anti-Chinese protest against trade agreements. I thought, it was interesting, how a simple dress or sunflowers could carry such an important message.

I would like to thank Robert S. Wells for sharing this important history with us. With his many years of service to this country and fostering relationships with a captain from the SS Japan, he was able to research and share this story with us that undoubtedly, has opened my eyes to the Chinese immigrant disaster.
Periodically, some of the students from LAUSD share some historical challenges of their ancestors. Many students share that their grandparents stated that they too would one day "return back to Mexico" However, months turn to years and years turn to decades. Ultimately, decades turn to generations, and that long ago wish of one day return "back home" never happens. Mr. Wells presentation reminded me of some of the students that we work with as well what my Grandfather use to say. When I earn enough money, I'm going back home. This didn't happen.
Mr. Wells, further elaborated that many of the Chinese that died in this disaster were from the Province. Its also similar to Mexico-US immigration from a few regions of Mexico. Thank you Mr. Wells.

Captain Wells did an amazing job recovering the information about the sunken ship. It was interested to hear of the beginning trade/ relationship the United States had with China. The relationship was beneficial for both countries but as time went on resentment formed in the states. One question i would pose to my students is : Why do you think the relationship between the US workers and Chinese workers became contentious? I was in awe that Captain Wells had some original coins that were dated all the way back to the ship wreaks time. Being able to touch a piece of history is priceless!

This was definitely an interesting class session. I liked learning about the sunken ship and the hidden history that remains there. This is something that Captain Wells has shed light and will never be forgotten.

On my recent visit to the Chinese American Museum, I wondered if the people who traveled to America keep the hair a certain way to show allegiance to their country like they did in the past. When men in the past would travel, they had long ponytails and their style of dress showed allegiance to the Emperor.

Thank you professor Dube for bringing in Captain Wells to present to us his new book, Voices from the Bottom of the South China Sea. A person of his importance and experience is a great asset to our class. It was very informative and detailed. Bringing that piece of history back to life is important. I had no knowledge of The Japan sinking off the coast of China.
