It's important to begin our discussion of the age of foreig¬n intrusion and Chinese resistance by giving it a bit of geographical shape. There now is a whole shelf of good recent books about Shanghai. Our knowledge of other treaty ports and of concessions and zones of various kinds is more patchy. Everywhere we will find foreigners and Chinese engaged in processes of mutual adaptation and cooptation.
