anyone else agree that this philosophy is totally communism pre- Karl Marx?? All I see when I am reading these quotes about punishment and "rewards" (basically the reward is just not being punished) are the faces of Stalin, Lenin, and Kim Jong Il.

And for our group I made a big chart with each philosophy and all of the questions and possible questions. I will have this available tomorrow for us to use.

I totally agree. Our philosophy is definitely the harshest and most dictator-like one. I suppose we can stress the importance of order, organization, and putting the state over one's well-being in some way without sounding too violent...basically we have our work cut out for ourselves.

I filled the chart out in our reader (it's overflowing, actually) so hopefully that will help us out during the debate along with eisler's chart.

I agree, the Legalist were the harshest of all the systems. As I was reading it, it just thinking of fascism. Absolute dedication to the state, the getting rid of rites in order to not be idle. It was an interesting read.

I agree that Legalism mirrors communism with it's strong law and punishment. For example, the USA ranks up there in countries with high rate of citizens in the prison system, yet harsh punishment alone doesn't deviate people from committing crimes.

I was having an of day at school and mentioned to my students that I was going to start running my classroom like a legalist. They had no idea what I was talking about, but it lead to a good discussion about ideals of running a society and governments, and then to how I should run my classroom. They were suprised that a society can be so rigid and stern with it citizens.
