In the visit of President Nixon to China, the Taiwan situation was much discussed. Results were included in the Communique of 1978, stating: "The Chinese government claims Taiwan is a province of China; the liberation of Taiwan is China's internal affair in which no other country has the right to interfere, and all U.S. forces and military installations must be withdrawn from Taiwan. Firmly opposing any activities aiming at any proposal for change."
In response, the United States agreed to China's position. Further, the U.S. reaffirmed "the ultimate objective for the withdrawal of all U.S. forces and military installations from Taiwan, progressively reducing its forces and installations as the tension in the area diminishes." To cement this agreement, both sides discussed specific fields as science, technology, culture, sports and journalism, "in which people-to-people contacts and exchanges would be mutually beneficial." To this effect, both sides have undertaken tremendous developments of such contacts and exchanges producing gigantic benefits to both sides even to the present time.
