Below is the summary of Manuel's and my curriculum project:

    * Our project would combine Manuel's interests as a 9th grade AP English teacher and mine as an 8th grade U.S. History teacher. I delve into Communism and the Cold War in 8th. Students come into my class with knowledge of Imperial China (which I teach in 7th) and the 'isms from 6th and 7th grade.
    * The literature link is Animal Farm. I'll re-read it before we depart.
    * Historically and politically we are looking at Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. My thin copy of The Communist Manifesto should offer up some interesting thoughts.
    * We are interested in the impact of the Cultural Revolution, specifically that on youth. Some library catalog searches here in Oak/Berkeley/SF have turned up Mao writings in English
    * We plan to get artifacts like the motivational posters one sees a lot in China and bring them back with us.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

    Best,
