GuestWhat horrifying news regarding the death toll after yesterday's earthquake only 900 miles outside of Beijing! Furthermore, a high school, containing thousands of students (fifty of whom are counted among the dead already) was leveled due to the enormous quake. After traveling in and around the same areas, the shock of the news hit a chord inside of me that resonated on a whole new level. Now, China is here - inside each one of us who ventured upon the PVPUSD educational tour - now, news, whether good or bad, seems to be OUR news. This class has been a tremendous chance to climb into a culture of dicotomies - even this quake - so devastating strikes in the midst of the amazing and magnificent structures that are under construction in order to house Olympic events this summer. After suffering a personal family loss, my condolences go out to all of the families, students, faculty, and staff of the quake victims. May they find peace and a renewed sense of strength in the days to come. :}

GuestPresident's Day, is an annual Loyola Marymount University event, that invites alumni and community members to come back to college for the day. Seminars on current topics of concern and interest are given by top professors in the field. This year, the Far East was featured in two of the seminars, listed below. Both were followed up with podcasts and both were worth attending. Next year, in March, the event will repeat. A personal invitation goes out to all of our class members to take advantage of an opportunity that is quite rewarding.

Guesthttp://www.einnews.com/china/
This site requires membership; however, it is quite comprehensive and an excellent way to have the news from China at your fingertips and ready to project using an LCD. Students are interested in the news events of China and are asking impromptu questions. Many of them can be answered with this web site without searching for hours.
As far as an educational website, Mr. Dowling has a good site at http://www.mrdowling.com/614china.html. Check it out!May 13, 2008 at 1:01 pm #35645Anonymous
