There was an AP article in the news yesterday about Christine O'Donnell, a senate candidate from Delaware. She claims to have classified information that she can't divulge which proves that China has a "carefully thought out and strategic plan to take over America." She goes on to say that "a country that mandates that you can only have one child and will not allow you the freedom to read the Bible" cannot be our friend.
This is the same woman that found it both necessary and appropriate to go on television and announce "I am not a witch," so I don't know how seriously to take her, but I found it an interesting commentary on our country's complex alliance with China and our mutual distrust.

She, Ch. O’Donnell, desperately needs a class on East Asia.

Hi jbaxter, Do you think Christine O' Donnell was sane when she claimed that China plot to take over the US? Do you think China is capable of taking over US? I feel so ridiculous about her ideas, which demonstrate lack of confidence in American govenment.

It sounds like she trying to use demagogue practices to gain supporters after the witch scare.

I am not sure that China wants to take us over, but they are sure nervous about the inability for us to sustain our debt. They, China, after all has a huge investment in our economy. I do not have the source for the information that I am citing. As was mentioned, we, China and the US, have a historical distrust. I think that they only time that we were on each others side, was during World War II.

This conversation reminds me of a couple of other sources on American involvement in Chinese history, recent. One is the movie "The Sand Pebbles", and another is a book by Barbara Tuchman. called Stillwell's China. I have tried to start the book a few times, but am currently taking a demanding class on China, and have a lot of other teaching obligations. [Edit by="ebeneke on Oct 20, 8:25:33 PM"][/Edit]

Good word ('demagogue' I had to look that one up). It will be an interesting decade coming up to see the development of US China relations. I hope they change for the better.

Hello. Who is O'Donnell? Two time loser to the senate race in Delaware. Her comment was taken out of context. I went back to read the transcripts of the debate. I was bored. However, there were some intresting points from both candidates. With regards to China, O'Donnell definitely needs to update herself on China and what is happening there. Yes, the USA owes China a lot of money. But, China has its own problems to deal and settle. The word demogogue does desrcibe how O'Donnell wanted to be viewed at that debate and carried over to election night. It backfired on her, especially when she got Sarah Palin to endorse her.
