China's Atlantis: How the Lion City was purposely-flooded to make way for a power station but remains completely intact 130ft underwater after 50 years http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2561147/Chinas-Atlantis-How-Lion-City-purposely-flooded-make-way-power-station-remains-completely-intact-130ft-underwater-50-years.html
This newspaper article is fascinating as it has facets and relevance to the ocean, via Qiandao (man-made) Lake. In order to build it, China had to submerge a city, and it’s remained mostly intact. Now it is a tourist draw for scuba divers and bringing in local monies to the community growing around it. The article reminds us of the variety of underwater structures that exist and are valuable for study by scientists, and tourists alike.
Qiandao Lake has only been around since 1959, the structures are much much older giving the locale an eerie “Atlantis-like” feel. With a tourism as a draw, the government who line their coffers with that money will have an incentive for clean up, education, and preservation.
