China's Role in UN

I am having a difficult time understanding common Chinese responses to international affairs, typically in its role in the Security Council. Why is it that it often votes with Russia, and often in opposition to the United States, Britain, and maybe France. I am thinking of its possible stance on the conflict in Syria. Would be grateful if anyone can point me in a clear direction.
