The Chinese woman 's posture is obviously reminiscent of Velasquez's painting. The whole idea of women grooming themselves and putting on perfumes and make up originated in the Orient, the Crusades opened up this chapter that had been closed by the Barbarian invasions.

I don't intentionally look for the occurances of replication. However, seeing the portrait of the Chinese woman in the mirror, and the following slide of a renaissance period woman in a very similar pose demanded my acknowledgement. I have yet to make all the connections, but I am certain that the cultural interactions via trade are responsible for much of the cultural replication.

If you look at Italian paintings of the 1200 you will notice that their eyes are elongated and their chests have the curvature of the funerary statues of the Tang Dynasty. They were attributed to the influence of artists leaving territories occupied by the Turks.Another explanation would be that there was more than silk traveling down the silk road. There was technology but also art and diseases.
