One issue that has always been in the forefront of China's development is how to incorporate the interior of the country to the coastal region. With lower population density, minority group conflicts, and territorial disputes, the interior has long been a concern for Bejing. Recently (CNN from January 2015) it was reported that China is planning a high speed rail project from Mongolia (north) to Hainan (south). Some stops will Xian, among others. Economic development is one reason, tourism another, but certainly assimilation, and consolidation is another. Attached is a screenshot of the article.

This is a fascinating story about the near intact city under Qiandao lake, which is now a tourist spot for scuba divers. Like underwater structures in Mexico, Easter Island, and others, this location is sure to bring more money to the tourism industry there. It's sad when we think of the reason why this city had to be submerged, but there is some unintended benefit from that.

Here is an opportunity to look at the comments about the economy of the two of the largest populated countries in the world: China and India. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh commented about the value of "open economy" and China in an exclusive interview with the New Delhi newspaper hindustan times on 6 July 2012. The London School Of Economics product, Mr Singh, stated that "even a neighbor like China has understood the logic of an open economy and is developing the institutional framework which is required for this".
