I was doing research for my curriculum project and I found an important resource that summarizes what we learned about the Chinese immigration to California per the presentation by Mr. Wells. The resource is a report from a committee commissioned by the Senate of the State of California to find the economic, cultural, and social impact that Chinese immigrants have on the state. The report touches on several topics discussed by Mr. Wells including the Burlingame treaty, the Six Company, guild and societies that supported the Chinese newcomers, the role of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company on immigration, the Opium Wars and the opening of China to the West, Confucianism on education and social organizations, etc. I'm going to take excerpts of this report and make them into primary sources for students to write essays on this topic. If you don't plan on using this in the classroom read it anyway it's a nice summary about what we learned in this class.
