There’s also a celebration with the Golden Dragon Parade & Los Angeles Festival in Chinatown. The parade starts at 1 p.m. on February 4, 2017 at Hill Street and Temple towards Bernard with the Festival 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Great opportunity for families and students to explore the cultural event in the Southern California Asian-American Community with decorated Asian floats, entertainers, business leaders, cultural groups and Asian food. Enjoy, Gong Xi Fa Cai and Happy New Year!
I would love to attend one of these events but am not sure if I can get out of town that weekend. I have not read about any events in Bakersfield, although I attended a celebration at our local library last weekend. Local dancers performed around 50 dances that told different stories and highlighted the upcoming Spring Festival/Chinese New Year. There was also a fashion show at the end of the performances that showcased fashion, and accessories, which was really cool. I am hoping that Bakersfield gets on board with this and brings more venues for our community.
The Asian Pacific Cultural Heritage Association will host the Lunar New Year Festival in Riverside, California, on Saturday, January 28, 2017. It is FREE. It begins with a parade, although the website does not specify the time, but it sounds like it will be in the morning. There will be firecrackers, opening ceremonies, music, dance, art, kung fu, sumo demonstrations, and etc. MOST OF ALL, you can learn about the journeys that brought these residents to our region.
