KeymasterWhat is your Chinese Zodiac Sign? And does it represent you?
I am a Rooster and I believe that it represents me pretty well.
Roosters are people that are early risers, proud, alert, deep thinkers and good speakers. They like to stay close to home. If you can break through their natural suspicion, they make wonderful friends.

GuestGrowing up with Asian grandmothers and their friends, the topic of Chinese/Asian Zodiac was a topic of conversation. I remember my maternal grandmother used to ask me what hour my friends were born and how I should be careful with this and that. Although I don't believe in the Zodiac, I've been surprised and amused by how some of the attributes sounds like me. I was born in the year of the Rat and the hour of the Dragon. I think it's something equivalent to the western Zodiac sign of the Sun and Rising sign. That could explain why the explanation of the year of my Chinese Zodiac animal does not completely sound like me...maybe, considering all the aspects of the year/day/time might give a more accurate picture.
Another area of great interest to many Asians are blood types. Some believe that different blood types have certain characteristics and that certain blood types are suited to get along/not get along with another blood types. Does anyone know about this?
Definitely a fun topic to explore with students of all ages/grades.[Edit by="seun on Dec 15, 11:57:26 PM"][/Edit]

GuestI am a monkey. "Monkey people are quick, funny, nosey, clever, witty, and successful. They have wonderful memories and are well informed about everything. They tend to chatter. This does drive friends away sometimes." I think that my friends would agree that for the most part this does describe me.

GuestThis year, 2010, the Chinese New Year begins on Valentine's Day, February 14th and is the year of the tiger. People born during this year are believed to be "born leaders". They are always in the lead and are respected for their courage, even from those working against them.
Tiger people are daring fighters, they are capable of standing up to the better end for what they think is right. Although they could be selfish from time to time in the little things, they are capable of great generosity. Tigers are unpredictable, always tense. and like to be in a hurry.
I wonder what are the tiger leaders that will be born this year will bring to the future of our world?January 4, 2010 at 6:32 am #29433Anonymous
GuestFrom the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco website
According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish.
All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.

Guest"Ram (Black or Gray Sheep):
Sheep people are elegant, wise, gentle, shy, and compassionate. They can be bossy, but that's because they're worried things will not get done correctly. This character trait often makes money for them."I can see the compassionate element. As for elegant, well, maybe on occasion. I tend to make new mistakes rather than repeating old ones so maybe there is some wisdom penetrating my thick skull.
Both gentle and shy at times. But I am also hard headed, stubborn, proud, foolish, and clumsy. So I don't know. Maybe the creators of the zodiac signs tended to only look on the positive side of people.

GuestBeing a Latino and growing up surrounded by friends who are concerned about the social behavior based on the zodiac, I was also curious about my own. When I learned that I am a Libra all those characteristics described exactly my personality, I was surprised and also paid closer attention to my friends personalities described in the Zodiac. Of course, it is a topic of interest for our teenagers, and good point to have them understand that our cultures have differences as well as similarities in regards to human behavior.

GuestI love the chart! you inspired me to look for images of the chinese zodiac and there are some amazing ones
so every 12 years there are millions of people being born sharing the same "animal" characteristics. what a global idea!
I found on wikepedia about East Asia and the calendar that: (quote)
The Korean zodiac is identical to the Chinese one.
The Vietnamese zodiac is almost identical to Chinese zodiac except that the second animal is the water buffalo instead of the ox, the fourth animal is the cat instead of the rabbit and the eighth animal is the Ram instead of the sheep.
The Japanese zodiac includes the wild boar instead of the pig.
The Thai zodiac includes a naga in place of the dragon and the rat/mouse is called the golden mouse

GuestI'm a sheep. People under the sign of the sheep are supposedly tender, polite, filial, clever, and kind-hearted: many of which I hope to be as part of my character.

GuestI've always know I'm a rat, and I have to tell you, after reading my Chinese horoscope I'm happier sticking with the Western astrology signs- mine is a Virgo.
Take a look for yourself, what would you rather be:
Rat: People born in the Year of the Rat are famous for cheerfulness and kindness. They are generous with those they love. Rat people love to gossip. That can cost them many friendships if they are not careful.
Virgo: The people who were born under the sign of Virgo have the strongly advanced analytical mind and all the time trying to glue labels on everything they see. They have sharp feelings of taste, time, hearing and sense of smell. The symbol of this sign is Virgo. It does not mean, that they are pure and sinless . It means that heir amazing abilities to observe allow them to see all the human lacks. Usually they do not like everything that they see, and they withdraw like Virgo.
Well, this is the most positive synopsis of a Virgo I could find, but I'd take it any day over the rat!

GuestWell, according to the list I am a PIG - "People who are born in the Year of the Pig are intelligent, sincere, brave, popular, and treat all people with great kindness. Pig people are often late and often forgetful."
I agree, I am brave, intelligent, popular and sincere and kind - BUT I am also prompt and not forgetful. Perhaps I am only half pig!?January 23, 2010 at 5:40 am #29441Anonymous

GuestResponse to jbrusa:
There is a whole of information based on the Blood type Personality. Although may website describes it as a Japanese phenomenon, it is quite common in both Korea and China as well. In fact in Korea, there are blood type cafes where food menus based on your blood types are customized as well as dating arrangements (called "meetings" in Korea). Some places even color coordinate certain sections of the cafes to produce the ambience most beneficial to particular bloodtypes--my friend who has been to one of these cafes observed that many foreigners belong in the O-type lounge.
Here are some websites for information:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_types_in_Japanese_culture,
http://www.japanvisitor.com/index.php?cID=359&pID=329
and you can google "Blood Type Personality" or "Blood Type".
But here are some general information about all four types:
Type O – The Warrior
