The 7 day week is not traditional in China. Not all calendars have weeks per se though months are pretty common. Consider that we are all wrapped up in the 7 day week in part due to Genesis "and God rested on the seventh day." The 7th day was the Sabbath and depending upon how you count it on Saturday or Sunday. In a number of countries Saturdays are regular work days though often half days. Also I have seen the bumper sticker "The Weekend, brought to you by Labor Unions." I never did the full research to confirm this assertion but it would not surprise me much if it were true.

Reading this article makes me feel pampered here in the United States. I sometimes complain not having some holidays' off! I could not imagine working eight days straight. I wonder if this goes for everyone that works or is it just certain professions? It seems as life in China is very demanding and competitive. Adults working eight days week and children going to school day and night, sounds stressful.

There was an article on the confusing Chinese holiday calendar. Evidently, the Chinese government changes the working calendar to reach certain goals and does not consider weekends sacred. Workers are asked to work through holidays if they are not productive and they also have 8-day and 7-day workweeks sometimes. The Chinese New Year, for example, begins on a Tuesday and ends on a Thursday and then is followed with an 8-day workweek. It is a cause of much complaint obviously. You can read the article here:
