I found the disillusionment of the intellectual Japanese community post WWII a very devastating and interesting. What happens to a culture as it attempts to rebuild after a war??? Especially when there is a guiding hand like that of the US occupation of Japan.... Obviously there were many positive things that happened, but the change was so rapid. The pictures in the marketing closely resemble the add campaigns in the US at the time. Then again the Japanese imperial model was also modeled after the ruling style of the western powers...

My wife's family is from Japan and I have often noticed the duality that exists in Japanese culture. On the one hand, they are a people deep in tradition. On the other hand they seem to have embraced the western ideas of consumerism and marketing. When visitinfg Japan, I often don't knwo what to make of all of this.
