GuestYeah, I heard about this on NPR and for once, I had an idea about where the news was happening in Asia. I got to thinking that if this had happened by the capital city, a lot more people might have perished.
And it is true, I feel that every time I listen to the NPR, Asia is mentioned in some context. Now I feel a lot more informed about things going on in Asia.April 19, 2010 at 1:40 pm #28438Anonymous

GuestWatching CCTV after news of the earthquake gave me an interesting perspective on events in China and how they are reported. The news anchor was interviewing a government official who admitted some difficulty getting aid to the victims because of its remote location and cold weather. He did praise the heroic efforts of the people who were working night and day to move rubble and pull people to safety. What followed was a photograhic exposition of the devastation with music from "Pirates of the Caribbean"!
I love this movie...I want Capt. Jack to defeat all demons both large and small no matter the unbelieveable or insurmountable odds. The musical score is fulled with intrigue, energy and vitality making me want to stand up and cheer for the Capt. Jack and Elizabeth and the rest of the cast...even down to the beating heart... I was invested in the characters' journey and fate.
So was it an accident that CCTV used this particular theme while showing the devastation from the earthquake or was the message intentional...we can overcome any anything and come out victorious?April 20, 2010 at 6:35 am #28440Anonymous
GuestIn a country as large as China, there must be some sort of tragedy quite often. Similarly in the US, it seems like you can not turn on the news without some horrible event taking place somewhere in the country. I was raised in The Netherlands where nothing ever happens.

GuestLearning about a cultural builds a bridge of connection. When I heard about the earthquake in China, I was horrified. I wished I could have somehow helped the people there. When the Northridge earthquake happened in California, a lot of my friends and family got together to help and support one another. The Chinese government seemed to have been doing the best they could to reach such a remote area but I stopped watching the news because all they wanted to show was heart-wrenching depictions off devastation. So why is it that the news only broadcasts negative events to dampen the spirit?

GuestI have also noticed that when tragic natural events happen in different parts of the world, we tend to forget our political differences. We look for ways to help distressed people that are undergoing severe hardship. Im so glad that after all is said and done, we realize that we are all the same race--the human race!

GuestThe response to the recent earthquakes in China, I believe, is very telling of the state of that country as a whole. If one compares the repsonse to, say, to that of the northridge quake, the differences aer stunning. Not only the response, but the infrastructure that was in place prior. The Northridge quake, though devastating, only caused limited damage as comapred to CHina. In time, hopefully, China's infrastructure will be able to handle such a disaster.
