Hi Guys,
Here are the notes developed last weekend. Open it with Word.
Claudia.
Thanks for the websites Nicole! The only other one I have gone to is the China National Tourist Office at http://www.cnto.org
Awesome, Claudia. Thanks for the notes.
I think we had spoken of having a running email with address and info. This weekend (or maybe sooner) I'll try to set up our addresses and info on email so we can just send them to and fro. Hope you are doing well!
Nicole
Claudia and Nicole, Thanks so much for your work.
Do we each want to take a section and research it more fully, or do we just want to see what we can each gather on everything?
Hope you guys are well.... I really enjoyed working with you on this at our orientation.
-Julia
Ni-hao all, sorry I haven't been online. I'm going to try to catch up a bit this coming week. Those are some neat sites. I've been doing a little research the old fashioned way, books. Remember from our orientation that the name for China is zhong-guo (pronounced jung gwo), which means middle kingdom? I just found out the Chinese name for America is mei-guo (pronounced something like mahri-gwo), which means beauty kingdom. So, I guess our reputation there can't be too bad.
Anyway, as to how we should tackle our topics, maybe we could divide them up, but also be on the lookout for good examples of the other topics as well. My own preferences would be : 1. Literature and Arts, i.e., sites connected to writers, works of literature, paintings, sculpture, gardens (had to get that in), plays and performances, etc. --these are my primary interests when I study cultures, and I do try to introduce a fair amount of this to my students, even if its not always in the standards;
2. Religion and Philosophy, as we said, temples, monasteries, related art and sculpture, Zen gardens, and also evidence of Confucian and Buddhist ideas and values in customs and beliefs.
I know I'll be finding connections to all the topics as we travel, so I'll be glad to share whatever I've discovered. I'll try to find some sites also, and whatever tips I learn from my reading.
Until then, zai-jian (zye-jen is close to the prounuciation), that is, goodbye.
Steve
Xie Xie Steve, sorry all I have not checked in lately, tomorrow is tha last day of school for us and it has just been BUSY around here. I like your idea Steve and I am ok with whatever direction we want to take this. We will have plenty of time on the plane to get more in detail.
Hi Folks,
I was planning on buying some local books, ones that maybe dealt with Stanford and/or San Francisco. Clay mentioned that we could go in on books together. Do you want to that with our group? Has anyone picked up anything yet? I haven't. Price and more importantly weight will decide my purchase.
I hope you are all doing well.
Nicole
Hey Nicole,
I have a North American Wildlife book I thought would be good for the kindergarten class and a LIfe Legends book that might work for the conv. home. You are more than welcome to share with me. No one ever gave a straight answer as to how many we needed, so... I think your ideas for books sound great. Everyone loves SF.
-Julia
Thanks Julia,
I think I'll see if I can pick up something not too heavy. It's amazing (and annoying) how the stuff that I am bringing to give weighs so much. That's ok. It forces me to bring less clothes and things.
Be Well,
Nicole
I know what you mean. The books must weigh 5lbs by themselves. Clay told us that we would be giving alot of what we have in China before the weight regulation comes into play. I'm still trying to go as light as possible including the books.... I'd still like to have room to bring things home.
