I concur with a lot of what you said and I am glad to hear it from a seventh grade teacher's point of view. I think a lot of our Gifted children will benefit from what we learned and what we can impart to them. I'm still unsure, because somehow I thought we would receive more cd's of some of the lectures.
One of my main goals is to learn more about East Asia in general and refresh my own knowledge regarding the history of East Asia and the relationships among the countries in that region / US-East Asia relationship. We surely accomplished this goal. I also would like to meet teachers from different schools in LA area since i just moved here and hopefully have some collaboration with the fellows in a future. I am not sure about this expectation yet but I will find out sooner or later. I will try my best to keep in touch with my peers (I remember our contact info. will be provided in the end).
The instructors' lecture is definitely inspiring. So is our discussions. The materials, the binder and the books so far we received, are great. And I appreciate all the other many opportunities for further study provided by this seminar.
It is difficulty for me to endure long sessions but it is personal problem, especially considering the time we have. Here is the dilemma. I would like to have more discussion time and interaction among students, however, we have limited time even to cover the content.
I forgot to mention the Japanese comics in our binder. Manga (comics) represents Japanese pop culture (I read so many Japanese Manga when I was in middle school maybe high school days), and also something the children can really relate to. This is one of the most precious parts in the binder that I will definitely use in my own classroom and encourage my colleagues to use them.
I want to thank you and Miranda for all of your hard work in putting this seminar together. I have learned so much from this seminar, and it has inspired me to go on learning about East Asia. Taking this seminar has given me a reason to explore East Asia which I have always been coureous about.
I enjoyed the opportunity to have a class with so many other professor in one seminar. We went through so much in such a short period of time, but I've now been exposed to so much, from the geography, dynasties, cinema, literature, history, religions, traditions, and philisophies.
I am very grateful for this opportunity. It was a worthwhile venture, and I woud highly recommend it. I'm not sure how you got my email address to invite me to take the seminar, but I glad that you did.
Sincerely,
Dawn M. Reid
I echo the thanks and appreciation notes to Miranda and Dube for hosting us at each class. It was hard trying to make it downtown past the traffic and I appreciate that we had refreshments at each meeting. Thanks for being patient with us when we may have tiptoed in a few minutes past start time; it was nice knowing that we wouldn't have to continue to hear a lecture about being PROMPT as we put up with in other venues. I look forward to a nice 'last session' as we end with what I understand to be great food.

1. My expectations were simply to get an overall knowledge and/or resources for East Asian cultures. I didn't expect much because we had too little time to possibly cover everything I would like to learn. My expectations were more than met because I actually found myself a bit overwhelmed with information. I don't know if it was just because I was so tired and overworked from all the changes in LAUSD and directing my Choral performances and music program, but I couldn't stomach all of the information that was provided. However, the information that was provided was very assuring that this was a good course to take in better circumstances where I could really focus on every piece of information presented. It seemed that all of the information presented was valid in some way to understanding the culture and philosophies of each of the East Asian countries that were covered.
2. The seminar has made me more confident in my knowledge on East Asian culture and I will try to incorporate as much of what I have learned as I can to my students in their lessons.
3. The seminar had good resources and presentations that were coherent and visually stimulating. I think that the only improvement would be to add a section in which we could go on a short field trip to an east asian museum or exhibit as one of the course seminars.
