Foo dogs or Chinese Lions are mythical creatures from the world of the supernatural. The Chinese created 450 such creatures. They were often created from parts of four or five animals. The foo dogs have circular patterns in their hair and tails. This is symbolic for Wisdom. They have been created in legend to ward off every kind of human malady, apparently, that’s why so many such mythical creatures were created. When one didn’t dispel a malady (for example, curing food poisoning), they call on another and another… Some of these mythical creatures sit on roofs with upturned eaves. Their purpose is to stick evil spirits in the butt and keep them away. The foo dogs are scary with sharp claws, bared teeth and bulging eyes. They sit at the entrance to accomplish just this, to keep evil spirits from entering the building. The animal is a symbol of energy and value, and is often displayed in a male/female pair. The male plays with a ball that symbolizes the Earth, while the female holds a cub.
