    Hi --

I'm one of the people assigned to take a look at your lesson plans, and I think they look great! You have plenty of hands-on learning for the students to do, and they are quickly integrating what they've absorbed from readings and documentaries into their analysis. My one suggestion would be to clarify WHY you are doing this with them -- what is the significance of the Tiananmen Square protest, why should they be taking time out of their study of US history to learn about it? While some of them will likely have heard of the protest, many will not, and regardless it would probably help them dig into the material and comparisons if they have a better understanding of its impact and the reaction to it.

    Best,
    Bethany

Hi! I'm not assigned... at least I don't think I am (how do I find out???) Anyhow, I really liked the fact that this lesson helps students connect the historical events of another country with that of our own. I believe that the students will find this lesson interesting

Thank you for your reply. In response to how your question, find out who you are assigned to review, look up the thread "Seminar Final Project Review List" from the "UTLA Spring 2011". Now, when you look it up, you have to click on page 2 of "UTLA Spring 2011" to find the "Seminar Final Project Review List" thread.

    Gamaliel,
Hi, my name is Sally Ashton and I am to review your lesson plan. I think it is very interesting how you chose to tie two events in different countries together in the context of a protest movement. Since you did not indicate the level of students, I am going to make suggestions that you may be able to implement, depending on your students.
On Day 1 - Warm - Up, I sometimes have the students create a three column chart, What I know, What I think I know, What I don't Know, just a little different from the basic K-W-L charts. Are the students able to use their class notes for their homework?
On Day 2 - it seems like a lot (to me) to try to accomplish in one class period, but you are the best judge. Are the students able to work with a partner on the Venn Diagram, or do you start them as a class with an example?
From Day 3 - I think if you are discussing Kent State that much, play the song "Ohio". Maybe see if they can take the lyrics and make a comparison with events that happened in Tiananmen Square. Again, partners on the Venn Diagram? Maybe to tie it altogether, have the studnets take their Venn Diagrams and make a double Venn so they can see the similarities.

thanks for a good idea and have a great summer!
    Sally
