I thought you all would find it interesting how much power and terror China is obtaning. Yesterday was proof of them being the global power

China roars but it's still too young to be calling all the shots

By Geoff Dyer in Shanghai and Joanna Chung in Hong Kong

Shanghai's new status as a weathervane for global markets proved to be short-lived after the stock market in mainland China rallied strongly yesterday in spite of sharp falls in the rest of Asia and Europe.

The dramatic trading on Tuesday, when the mainland market plunged 9 per cent, had raised the prospect that China was developing the capacity to spread global financial contagion. Halfway round the world, traders on Wall Street were blaming the Shanghai market for Tuesday's 3.5 per cent drop in the S&P 500.

Indeed, there was some subdued pride among Chinese traders that the biggest one-day drop in a decade in Shanghai had also demonstrated the apparent importance of the country in global markets.

Again China is in the news, this time showing their political power in Iran read and enjoy.
As americans should we be conserned?

BEIJING – China urged Iran on Thursday to halt uranium enrichment and step up efforts to reach a peaceful, negotiated solution to the international dispute over its nuclear program amid a visit by Iran's deputy foreign minister.

“We hope that Iran can give a positive response to the appeal of the international community and faithfully abide by resolution 1737,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular news briefing.

Iran has ignored a U.N. deadline set in the Dec. 23 resolution to halt the enrichment of uranium, which the U.S. says is part of a secret effort to build nuclear weapons. Enriched to a low level, uranium is used to produce nuclear fuel but highly enriched uranium can be used in an atomic bomb.

In talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing Thursday, China's Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing reiterated that China hopes the dispute can be resolved through diplomatic negotiations as soon as possible, a ministry statement said.

Qin said the international community should “keep calm and make efforts, including efforts outside the framework of the U.N. Security Council to push forward the resumption of negotiations.”

China has repeatedly spoken out against the use of sanctions and other types of force against Iran but also has been part of discussions focused on finding ways to pressure Iran to suspend enrichment.

Senior diplomats from the five permanent Security Council members and Germany met Monday in London to discuss the issue. Officials in London and Washington said new measures would likely include incremental restrictions on trade and arms.

However, sharp differences appear to remain between the tough U.S. position and what Russia and China – veto-holding council members with close ties to Iran – are willing to accept.

I thought you would find it interesting that yesterday in my U.S. history class we started off talking about the growing economy of China. I told my students what I had learned Monday night about the different dynasties that have ruled China and left the story telling then that In the 20th century the United States was the economic ruler and during the 21st it would be China.
I used this as an intro into a lesson on Manifest Destiny.
    What do you think??

Article of interest in newspaper today:

Belief that a child born this year will be lucky is likely to bring a bounty of births - and challenges to the Chinese. Many expectant parents have been waiting for the wheels of fate to turn. Since Feb 18th, couples hoping to have babies under the traditionally auspicious sign of the pig have flooded China's hospitals. Many Chinese believe it is good to have a baby during the year of the pig because traditionally pigs represent wealth. The expected bumper crop of babies will strain the country's health care system and orphanges, officials and analysts say, and raises concerns that the baby boom will burden the schools and labor markets in the coming decades.

Bejing is expecting 170,000 babies this year, 50,000 more than last year. More than 137,000 babies will be born in Shanghai this year, almost double last year's figure.

Zodiac beliefs are rooted in a millennia of tradition. the Chinese lunar calendar was developed in the Xia dynasty.

This year's baby boom could lead to more girls placed in Chinese orphanges. In China's vast countryside, where traditional beliefs are stronger and there are fewer doctors, problems could be serious. Women might not get as good health cre this year. And the problems at birth may foreshadow challenges to come.

    HI group

I am diong my field study on religion, phylosophy and cults in China.
I have found information on the Fulon cult and various other cults. I can tell you that they and many other cluts are simply religions that have been banned from China due to Communism. The Chinese government has begun using the term cult as a way to regulate the underground religious activities. I will bring my information and books to class Monday 3/5 maby we can spend some time after class determining just who will do what for our field study.

Please let me know what you think

I find it facinating that in China because you are limited to the number of children the people there are waiting for a "good Year" to have a child. How much better can a child be if they are born in a certian year?
I am doing my field study on Cults and this idea of good years and bad years seams to fit right in, what do you think?

Well, how much better you ask? The Chinese lunar calendar notes the year of the pig as a "lucky" birth year, and a year that represents wealth!! Cult'ish'? Probably not. Superstitious? Perhaps.

There has been a history of fighting along the border of China and Vietnam. Many bloody wars have been fought over that border area. According to an article in the Asahi Newspaper, since 1991 when the border began to open between the two countries, both sides have experienced quite a boom in their economies. Today, these countries that were once enemies, now unite with an estimated 9,000 Chinese and Vietnamese crossing a 136-meter-long bridge connecting the two lands together. The gate is now open from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM everyday. There are no visas or passports required to pass through. Most of the goods passing through are Chinese-made goods, fresh produce and home appliances. The Vietnamese cross over to receive Chinese medicines and put their children in Chinese elementary schools.

    Hi,

I found the previous posting on China's present relationship to Vietnam particularly interesting because of our night custodian at PVIS. Usually a positiive, smiling soul, he was somewhat dismayed at my excited annoucement that I was going to China. Coming from South Vietnam, he still sounds very angry about the war. Now on a daily basis, he comes to my classroom and proclaims, "You don't want to go to China." Although partly jesting, I know that the Vietnam War stilll haunts him.

After returning recently from China, my sister was amazed at the site of some Chinese children begging for money. Some were very scared on their faces and their limbs were maimed in order to gain more empathy from the public. Evidently, this maiming of the body takes place during youth so that the family can gain money by begging for pity. She said that seeing some of these young children with disfigured bodies just about made her sick. She can hardly believe that this practice still exists. Does anyone know anything more about this practice still taking place in China?

I never thought those things would be inflicted intentionally for profit. I hope that isn't true. Our tour guides in China last time tried to discourage us from giving money or buying things from those who came around the bus. But....carry some small money with you to give out and/or buy things.

I was flipping channels last night and came across the exact scene of the Jet Li movie "Hero" we watched in class. Except it was on a Spanish channel so Jet and his buddies were all speaking Spanish. Nice twist. 😛

Thinking back to the professor's lecture last night: He mentioned Tomoe, a Japanese woman warrior. There's a great book by Maxine Hong Kingston called Woman Warrior. The books jumps back and forth between her experience as an Asian American, and a fable about the training of a real woman warrior - a great read!

Thoughts on last nights lecture -

    no mention of gender socialization

because an act is woman to woman it is justified???

"competitve grooming" - plastic surgery, eating disorders, footbinding -- what have we done to our women and young girls???

importance of women as mothers - this argument has also been used in U.S. History i.e. "Republican Motherhood"

important roles do not equate to equality
