Hi I'm Felicia. My kids call me Ms. Mills. I teach 10th grade English at Ayala High School in Chino Hills. I've been teaching for six years. I'm participating in the seminar because I want to learn about genocide and oppression in east Asian history and incorporate it into our lessons during the reading of novels such as Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Tale of Two Cities, and 1984.
Hello, I am Amanda Markovich and I teach World History and AP World history at Rim of the World High school in Lake Arrowhead. I am taking this course because my content knowledge of East Asia is relatively weak compared to my "Western" knowledge. Looking forward to a great week!
Hi, I'm David Millians, and I have a self-contained classroom of ten and eleven year olds at Paideia School, a medium-sized private school in Atlanta, Georgia. Every other year, our theme for the year is China. I want to learn how to expand our East Asia curriculum. I'm looking forward to meeting you all in person.
Hello,
My name is Steve Throop. I am truly an international child. Even though my family is from the Southern California area, I grew up in Papua New Guinea and Australia. My first teaching job out of college was at a large international school in Indonesia, and I currently work at Escondido Charter High School as a teacher and liaison for the international program we have on campus. I have a strong interest in different cultures and belief systems and hope that this course will facilitate my knowledge of Asia as a whole. I look forward to meeting everyone in person!
I am Joe Darrough a teacher at Escondido charter high school, I teach the international leadership, photography, technology and graphic design.
This year we will have 28 students from mainland China.
This is my second residential experience. I was fortunate enough to travel to China last year with Clay and Venus. Truly a life changing experience
I have my bachelors from Art center college of design was an exchange student at Caltech. I was in orphanages in the Peace Corps and worked 20 years in business in Los Angeles.
I went back to my hometown of Escondido to teach and to get back to the kids

Good afternoon everyone,
My name is Lyla Chisholm. Currently, I teach English for grades 9 through 12 at Escondido Charter High School. I mostly work with the international students and program on campus. A majority of my students are from China. From this seminar, I would like to better understand the culture and history of my students to improve my teaching strategies and create a more diverse curriculum. Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow.
Hello. My name is Rachel Wann. I have been teaching English and Social Studies for 14 years at a rural high school in the desert of Borrego Springs. My weakness is in modern East Asia, and my students very rarely encounter any Asians in my school. I wanted to find a better way to teach them about the region rather than rely on our even weaker textbooks. Looking forward to being cold in the 75 degree weather!
Hi Everyone,
It's great to hear back from Rachel, Lyla, Joe, Steve, David, Amanda, Felicia, Rad, and Amy! Looking forward to meeting you folks and everyone else in person tomorrow morning! Take care everyone and drive safely.

Hi everyone! My name is Bob Rea and I majored in English and history and have always been fascinated with Asia. I lived there for a year and was quite impressed with the industriousness of the people I found there. I later spent four and a half years in Europe, so I really enjoy travelling overseas. I enjoy bringing a firsthand perspective to my teaching and I look forward to getting current and informed viewpoints relating to modern Asia and especially to our number one trading partner, the People's Republic of China. Can't wait to get started! See you at Trojan Central!
Hello fine folks, I am looking forward to getting to know you. My name is David Morton and I am a teacher at Escondido Charter High School. I teach in an independent study program. I teach 9 through 12th grades. I am a father of two girls, one a sophomore at UC Davis, and one who is a sophomore at my school. I am excited to learn more about all things Asia. Last year I had two international students from China and I will have two this year as well.

Good morning everyone ! My name is Beatriz Martos and I teach 5th grade at San Jacinto Elementary. Prior to this, I taught World History and U.S. History at the middle school level. My purpose in attending this seminar is to begin creating a Social Studies curriculum for my grade level team which will bring more awareness of different cultures into the classroom. I hope to present ideas for literature, lesson plans, and websites which we can use to expand the current curriculum.
Hello, I'm Diane Mierzwik - no name tag lady today. I teach 9 and 10 English in Desert Hot Springs. I've been in education for 26 years with a variety of experiences. I'm here because I love to learn and then pass that learning on to my students.
