GuestHello fellow educators, My name is Victor Marlen and I currently teach Economics and Government at Los Osos HS in the city of Rancho Cucamonga. I can't believe I am about to embark on my twenty ninth year as a classroom teacher. I have always placed great value and emphasis on cultural awareness and geographic factors when teaching the Social Sciences, therefore, I look forward with great interest to incorporating the knowledge and resources that will be provided by the institute.

GuestHello! My name is Joann Quintero and I currently teach 7th grade language arts at Rancho Cucamonga Middle School. In previous years I have taught a 7th grade language arts/history block with the occasional ELD class thrown in. As much as I miss teaching 7th grade history, I really do love the fact I only have to prep for one subject. I'll be starting my 13th year of teaching. I'm looking forward to incorporating the resources into my teaching.

GuestHello,
My name is McKenzie Tarango and I teach U.S. history at Oak Hills High School. I am excited to participate in this USC-China Institute summer seminar because I believe it will provide me essential tools to incorporate the use of compare and contrast techniques using Eastern Asian countries. It seems as though the only times our students hear and learn about Eastern Asian countries in U.S. History is in reference to the Open Door policy, immigration quotas, World War II and its aftermath as well as the Cold war including the Korean War and the Vietnam War. However I believe Asian countries have a major impact on the U.S. today in regards to our national security as friend and foe as well as economic partners and rivals and even our evolving pop culture. In order to keep students’ attention I always try to tie the subject at hand to why it matters today. I have found Korea, China and Japan provide many current opportunities to compare and contrast important ideas covered under state standards such as democracy, communism, dictatorships, capitalism, socialism, community and cultures.Thank you for allowing me to participate in this seminar I look forward learning and exploring this significant culture and furthering my knowledge on how to incorporate it in class to further our students knowledge on a significant culture in our ever connected world today.
