Mary we sound like we would be great roommates, but I am not sure how we are to request rooming together. Hi Mary Stark! I don't think I will recognize you from your description.

    Hello All!
My name is Priya Talreja. I am from Saratoga, California (in Northern California). I teach Geography, World History and SDAIE World History at Pioneer High School in San Jose, CA.

Though I am from the bay area and love it I am excited to be back in Southern California for a couple weeks this summer. I graduated from Claremont Graduate University with my Masters in Teacher Education last year. So I had the chance to live in the Inland Empire for 15 months. At that time I taught 7th grade history in Rialto.
I am also looking forward to being back on USC 's campus (I once took a month course at USC back when I was in high school and I got to live in the dorms).

Of course, like most of you I am interested in learning more about East Asia and finding creative ways of sharing the rich culture and history that the history books often ignore. See you soon!

On page 34 of our readings {8} it seems like Mohism promotes the caste system. I would like your take on this since I am not clear on line 7 through the end of the passage.[Edit by="mstark on Jul 14, 9:51:47 AM"][/Edit]

Marylynn, what part of my description won't you recognize??? I am taller than a grasshopper - thinner than a Giant Redwood - and more beautiful than our hot desert sand. Who could not pull me out of a crowd by that description? ---- I am into Mohism on this day. It is the one philosphy that I have the least or zero knowledge about. The man does not think music and dance will solve the peoples three major worries. I believe that he is correct. Music will not solve the problems but it does give a society a moments reprive form the saddness of real life. [Edit by="mstark on Jul 14, 9:53:07 AM"][/Edit]

    Hello!

My name is Rebecca Itow and I teach honors English 9 and 11 at Simi Valley High School. I am also the Mock Trial coach at our school. I have an AA in dance, a BA in Theatre Directing, an MA in Education, and a great passion for genetic research on Tourette's Syndrome.

I would have responded earlier, but I just returned from taking 18 freshly graduated seniors to France and Intaly, and Internet connections were sparse there.
Regarding the picture, I will see what I can find and post again.

Looking forward to working with you all.
    Rebecca

    Hello, all.

I have been teaching sophomore and junior language arts at Simi Valley High School. Next year, I'm looking forward to team-teaching freshmen with Rebecca Itow, who is also attending this seminar and first told me about it last May.

I'll enjoy matching people to all the introductions when we meet in a couple of weeks.

    Aloha,

Though I only lived in Hawaii for two years, I caught the spirit of aloha. Even better, folks thought I was a local. Very nice.

I teach American Literature to eleventh graders in Ventura and have taught in Ohio, Oregon, Hawaii and California. For reasons that remain a mystery to me, I have been interested in things Asian (art, food, philosophy, culture in general) since I was quite young. It seems odd to me that a little girl raised by Ozark grandparents would develop such an interest, but I did. Here I was surrounded by cowboys (real ones, not urban [a cousin of mine was six times world rodeo champion]) and all I wanted to do was learn how to use chopsticks. Some friends of my mom had traveled in Asia and had lovely objects of art that seemed to convey another whole way of looking at life. I was hooked.

When my son was a freshman at Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, Japanese was offered for the first time. I encouraged him to take it and later, when we moved to Hawaii, he attended Iolani and continued his studies with excellent teachers, eventurally marrying a girl he met in college who is Japanese.

I'm excited to be attending this seminar, but a little intimidated by all the computer jazz or, as I confided to Miranda, I was dragged kicking and screaming into this century. I'm more of a notebook-under-my-arm-and-head-for-the-woods kind of gal.

    Hey guys,

I had my first anxiety dream about going back to school, so the Fates have told me I need to actually check my e-mail, and lo! all this seminar stuff has been taking off while I have been lazing by the pool.

    Here's me:

    1. Kelli Williams-Korbel
    2. Saugus High School; I teach English 10 Honors (world lit.) and Science Fiction/ Relevancy (sort of like Comparative Lit. and current events, combined). I also advise the Anime club.
    3. see attached! (if you have high speed-- I'm too lazy to downsize the file...)
    4. I'm married, have a 3 year old son...I love to play World of Warcraft, I travel extensively (my favorite places to visit are Mexico and India), my favorite writer is Chuck Palahniuk. I am not looking forward to leaving my family behind (wah!) but I am stoked about the seminar. 😀

I'm James Wyss and teach at Diamond Valley Middle School in Hemet. A year ago I worked with 24 language arts students two periods a day trying to improve their language arts CAT scores and also taught 7th grade social studies; this past year it was all 7th grade social studies.
For years I alternated between teaching and archaeology arriving in So Cal to work on the construction of Diamond Valley Reservoir, the emergency water supply and distribution point for most of the water in this end of the state. As the field work finished, I started teaching in Hemet while my wife stayed on to work with the artifact collection ( about 1,000,000 pieces) and oversee its curation.
I look forward to meeting everyone next week.

Hi Everyone ! I received a call today I'd been added to the seminar. I'm currrently RSP at 2 elementary schools in ABC Unified (Cerritos) and reside in south orange county. I was offered a position in social studies if I wanted to change for fall, but didn't jump at the chance just yet. My background is social sciences, special ed, English, and studio teacher (films). I also have a very small consulting business (mediation and small bus. start ups). I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and looking forward to the classes and updating/increasing my knowledge base for "everything Asian". L.Culp......get in touch. See you next week. Susan 😀 (Miranda's suggestion to post here)

    Hello all!

My name is Amanda Geisner and I am thrilled about being a part of this seminar.

I teach World History and U.S. History at John F. Kennedy Middle College High School in the Corona-Norco School District. The school is a magnet school and is available to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in the surrounding area. We have been open for 2 years and have a small population of just 500 students! The school sits on the Riverside Community College Norco Campus and the students co-enroll in classes at RCC Norco while taking their high school classes... This is why the school is considered a "middle college" high school. It is such a fun environment!

I look forward to meeting you all on Monday.

    😀
