I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, China: Dawn of a Golden Age and wow, what a surprise I had! I felt as if I were actully there. I have to admit, I have never been to a museum website, so I do not have an actual frame of reference; but, I can tell that this website is extremely thorough, well labeled, well maintained and easy to navigate.

First I clicked on the Collection Database and went to Works of Art. With each image, there was the title of the work, the artist, the date and the accession number. There were many pages of works of art, all online.

Next, I clicked on The Permanent Collection, Special Exhibitions, and Collection Databases. I read the instructions about how to read the captions with the object's name and date, about the artist, and the mediums and dimensions of the displayed objests. The culture or country of origin was also included in this section.

I really enjoyed this website and could have easily stayed there for hours. I found it very helpful to have the art pieces so well described. As a novice, I really needed just that kind of information.

Congratulations and thank you to this wonderful museum website. I highly recommend it to all of you teachers, artists, and/or art buffs.

I agree with Dottie that it is a great exhibit to view from your computer.

    The link is:
    http://www.metmuseum.org/special/china/index.asp

What is wonderful is it mentions many of the dynasties and revisits info that Clay and our guests have discussed. It is a wonderful and artisitic way to reinforce.

Plus, there is a current exhibit on Korean manuscripts that I plan to go back to as we begin study in that area.

There is so much info out there and this class is helping me spot at recognize much of it.

I am just thoroughly impressed about the organization and the way information has been furnished so you can get anything you are looking for regarding Eat Asia. Who would have thought of creating an online museum to supplement or complement instruction?!
Kind of reminds me of the way Obama organized his capaign so well that everything seemed to be taken care of even when problems arose. This team working at giving us information on East Asia is doing a phenomenal job. I am actually looking forward to when my kids study about Asia because I have a tested and true site to visit now and not forgetting of course the books given to us by the forum.
Team Asia Forums, you are appreciated...

The posting of the online museum is most helpful to augment the classes I will be teaching about China in the not so distant future. It is organized by showing art from different dynasties and will help to show students some realia surrounding the history lessons themselves. Thanks for the link to the museum.

I also enjoyed the site. I have a question, and it may have been covered in class. We cover so much information, it's starting to blend together. Have we talked about the significance of the "Silk Road"? Can anyone help me out? I'm planning on doing more research over winter break when things slow down for me a bit.

We have touched a little on the SIlk Road, but not in any great detail. Some good books:
The Silk Road: Two Thousand Years in the Heart of Asia by Frances Wood
The SIlk Road: Art and History by Jonathan Tucker
Benjamin of Tudela by Uri Shulevitz
Stories from the Silk Road by Cherry Gilchrist
The Silk Route: 7,000 Miles of History by John Major
Exploration by Land: The Silk and Spice Routes by Paul Strathern

    Hope these help!

A website which lists the museums in Japan (some with English) is http://icom.museum/vlmp/japan.html

I had fun exploring some of these sites. I was especially struck by the beautiful architecture of these museums.

Thanks, Susan. When things slow down a bit (do they ever?), I'll have to check these books out.

Both these websites are awesome and very helpful. I find with my students...especially my ELD students, having some sort of visual to go along with what I'm teaching always helps

i love museums online, they are the best when money is tight, or the place is far away try the british museum online, they have great stuff for this one on China http://www.ancientchina.co.uk/menu.html. Its great because each section has a story, soemthing to explore and then a challenge/game. Your students will love it. There is also one for Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and Greece. They are such a useful tool.

I spent quite some time checking out this site. I often begin the year with my 10th grade honors students with a unit on the archetypal hero in which we read The Epic of Gilgamesh. I downloaded and printed lots of material from this site's exhibit entitled "Beyond Babylon: Art, Trade, and Diplomacy in the Second Millennium B.C." Although some of the art isn't exactly the right time period as Gilgamesh, viewing a culture's art really does help the students (and me) to better picture the story.

I know this isn't necessarily an East Asian topic, but I thought I'd thank you for the link!
