The rationale for this unit is to allow for cross curricular activities and focus while addressing the CCSS. The students will learn how to use descriptive language to enhance writing and speaking. The unit focus on syllabication, which gives students the necessary tools to pronounce unfamiliar words. Also, students will have the opportunity to practice speaking in front of a crowd and create artwork for display. This unit will use the Japanese style poem( Haiku )to facilitate culturally relevant learning. I hope to expose the students to Japanese culture through poetry, art and music.

The plan to assess student achievement will be formative with the use of collecting completed worksheets and written assignments. Also, I will informally assess students' daily by asking, "Where do Haikus come from? How may syllables does it have? What is the form/pattern of a Haiku? What are the usual themes in a Haiku?" I will assess their achievement in the end by the correct usage of syllables, descriptive language, oral delivery and the format of their Haikus. Also, the art piece that accompanies their Haiku will be considered.
