KeymasterHere are some helpful links regarding health-related information and preparations for travel in China and Japan:
Lonely Planet
- General Travel Health pageCenter for Disease Control (CDC):
- Health Information for China
- Health Information for JapanWorld Health Organization (WHO):
- International Travel and Health for China
- International Travel and Health for JapanYou may want to schedule a checkup with your physician prior to the study tour. Know that temperatures and humidity in China and Japan during our travel time will be EXTREME, especially the humidity.
I can recommend a very good travel clinic that I went to in February for a flu shot and Hepatitis A vaccination prior to a short visit to Bali. The Healthy Traveler Clinic in Pasadena provides physician consultations and vaccinations on-site. You have to make an appointment beforehand and it is a bit more expensive than what you can probably get through health insurance-covered visits, but I thought it was worth it for a thoroughly pleasant experience - well, as pleasant as shots can be, anyway.

GuestFor all those Kaiser members like myself, you need to make an appointment to get vaccinations for travel. They can book up quickly. I just had them yesterday and there are 3 that are required for China (at least according to Kaiser) - Hep A, typhoid, and tetanus if you dont have that already.

GuestI went to the County Health Department and got about $543 worth of shots. 5 in the left arm and 3 in the right arm. 😀 Fun fun fun.

GuestRichard,
5 Shots!! Maybe you were counting all the additions to the Tetanus (Pertussis and Diphtheria?). Or did you get the Hep B? Anyway, I got mine too. I felt a little sore after. Also, the doctor said that it might be worthwhile to get some probiotics at 'Whole Foods" or the like to prepare for the different bacterial environment. I have been doing some research and have read that European travelers do this often. Has anyone heard about this?

GuestI've been taking probiotics for years. It helps with digestion and overall health of a person. You can buy them for much cheaper at Trader Joes and you dont need to refrigerate them.
