Below is a web resource that I have used when talking with my class about the Genocide that occurred in Nanking China during the time period leading up to World War II. I open up a discussion in pairs and then with the whole class about the things that shocked them most from the reading. This article is probably the most intense reading that I have them read all year in my class and I use it for both my AP and Regular World History courses. It is also an article to build off of when we talk about the justification or the lack of justification for the US dropping atomic bombs on Japan. Many students find the bombing of Japan to be inhumane. This article brings into light a few pieces of reasoning to consider for the other side, considering the Japanese beliefs of surrender.
