sshiva, this is WONDERFUL!!! What a resource! I like the idea of comparing a place that we're studying to where we live. It makes it more interesting for the students, and certainly more meaningful. This is a GREAT FIND! Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to introduce it to my students! πŸ™‚

Prof. Dube's use of maps to compare countries and using their geography to draw conclusions and make inferences about the culture really appealed to me as a great way to engage students of any age. I teach first grade so I began looking for a website that could give my students access to this kind of information and provide much needed background that they could relate to as well. http://www.ifitweremyhome.com is just such a website! β€œThe lottery of birth is responsible for much of who we are. If you had been born in a different country, what would your life be like? Would you be the same person?” This quote is from the website, and it is what I want my students to think about. Click here to go their US-CHINA page: http://www.ifitweremyhome.com/compare/US/CN.
The site was developed by Andy Lintner, a software developer with humanistic ideas. If you've clicked the above links, then you already know how easy it is to compare any two countries. I think this is a great way to introduce the study of a new East Asian country before diving into any text. For older students, this site is a great first stop for a research paper. And it is useful for math instructors who can have students create comparative graphs and make inferences/draw conclusions about what it all means to a living human being experiencing those conditions. Thumbs Up
