These are the some important dates that I am sharing with my students in the class.
250 -300 A.D. - Arabs begin to trade with china.
1515-Portuguese traders arrive in China.
1557-Portugal builds a permanent settlement on the Chinese peninsula of Macao.
1699-The British East India Company reaches trade agreements with China.
1754-1763- The French and Indian War.
1763-1765- Englend passes a series of taxes to force the American colonies to help pay for the French and Indian War.
1768-English troops arrive in Boston to enforce the new laws.
1769-Wu Ping- chien is born in China.
1773-The tea Act allows the East India Tea Company to sell tea for less than other merchants.
The Bostan Tea Party.
1774-England closes the port of Bostan.
1775-The American Revolution begains on April 19th.
1783-September3- The Treaty of Paris rnds the American Revolution.
December- The Harriet reaches Africa and begains America's foreign trade.
1784-The Empress of China sails to Macao.
1785-The sloop Experiment goes to China and proves even smaller ships can participate in
the China Trade.
1787-The Columbia sails for China and becomes the first American ship to circumnavigate
the globe.
1794-The ship Union leaves for the China Trade. Its caption, John Boit, is only 19 years old.
1795-The Union is attacked in Puget Sound while collecting furs for trade.
1807-President Thomas Jefferson orders passage of the Embargo Act.
1909-Congress repeals the Embargo Act.
1812-June18- The United States declares war on Englend .
1815-The War of 1812 ends. The China Trade resumes.
1832-Robert Bennett Forbes Returns to the United States after years in the China Trade.
1838-Robert Bennett forbes returns to China Trade to try and regain his futune.
1839-The First Opium War.
China Trade system begins to break down.
1843-Death of "Houqua", Wu Ping-chien.
The China Trade becomes less important and profitable to the United States.
