I found it interesting that in this article, China was having war games with Australia, who I thought was our ally. Yet I can understand this, because of course, Australia, is much closer to China than we are. They are probably trying to "play nice", and therefore, play it safe. I found it interesting also, that the writer of the article indicated he thought that the hostility by the military was possibly caused by the up and coming's military men, because they were "inexperienced". Or, he mentioned that they had been taught that America was the enemy. Personally, from the time that I have taught about China, it seems that they have almost always been skeptical and somewhat hostile to outsiders, being just generally insular. Of course there has been exceptions in their history, like the voyages of Zhuang Ze (I think I have that right.)

When I read the article I had the same question about Australia but after thinking about it came to the same conclusion as you. It is interesting how many times in history China has "closed its doors". I am looking forward to the lecture on U.S.-China relations.

Thank you for sharing with us this article. I found interesting the following “Why do you sell arms to Taiwan? We don’t sell arms to Hawaii,” said Col. Liu Mingfu, a China National Defense University professor and author of “The China Dream,” a nationalistic call to succeed the United States as the world’s leading power." In previous post I have also mentioned about a political add also considering the future political and military leading role of China in the world. Is this going to be the political reality in the near future?

thanks for posting this article! I was fascinated with how the Chinese view their military, plus the military obligation. I discussed this with some of my students, and I was surprised to learn that many of my Korean students had moved to the US for not only a better education but also because they did not want to participate in the mandatory military requirement. interesting, and I am so happy we do not have such a thing (as of now) in the US!

Thanks for posting the article. I had a lot of students ask me about China and its potential, and especially if the chinese. I shared with them this article, and had a great discussion on the importance of diplomatic relationships and war potential between the two countries.
