Hello everyone,
My name is Heather Desmond (soon to be Knight) and I am currently teaching Honors and "regular"/college prep 10th grade World History at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills. Next year I will be teaching Humanitas U.S. History as well.
Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of personal experience with Asian history--my studies, living abroad experiences and traveling has mostly been focused on Europe and the Middle East, so I'm hoping this course will broaden my knowledge and understanding. My classes just covered the Vietnam and Korean Wars, and we are about to start a mini-unit on the Communist/Cultural Revolution in China and post-war Japan. We've already talked about Imperialism and WWII but there was definitely a focus on Asia in both of those units. World History to me is definitely about making the connections and seeing the patterns in events and cultures, and helping the kids to find these connections on their own.
On a side note, I'm hesitantly looking forward to seeing what the traffic is going to be like coming form ECR to Pasadena right after school, as my fiance and I are house-hunting in the area.
Excited to meet everyone! Enjoy spring break!

Hello!
My name is Claudia Castaneda and I teach ESL and 7th grade English at King Middle School. I am also the part time bilingual coordinator. I am very excited about this seminar because I have always had this attraction to Asian cultures specially China. I have been thinking about incorporating information about more cultures in my lesson plans. My ESL students come from all over the world so it helps when they learn about each others' cultures. Next semester I am starting my Masters on Multicultural Education and I am really looking forward to going back to school. I feel the same way about this seminar.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Leila Tong-Lee and I have been teaching multiple subjects at Wilson High for many years.
Our school is in the process of becoming an IB school. This seminar will definitely increase my awareness
and knowledge of China, offering an ideal opportunity for me to explore the arts, literature, history and culture
of China. As an artist and educator, this seminar will increase my understanding of Asia, and in turn I can
design appropriate lesson activities for my IB curriculum in all my classes.
My present teaching assignments include: Leadership, Careers with Children, Advertising Design,
Child Development/Intro. to Careers with Children, and coaching assignments:
the Boys' and Girls' Varsity Tennis Teams. My other commitments include: FHA-HERO
Chapter Adviser, ASB Leadership Adviser, Network Lead Teacher for Healthy Calif.
I am continually interested in incorporating multicultural aspects in all my classes
and sharing them school wide. This upcoming seminar will be a treat and am looking
forward to meeting all of you!
Best to All,
Leila

Hello Everyone !
I am Rebecca Liao, I teach K/1st in Jackson Elementary. I am teaching Chinese in our after school LEARNS program. I teach multiple subjects. I like to introduce different cultures to my students through Social Studies, videos, artifacts, special occasions, and celebrations.

Hi Everyone,
I am delighted to meet, at least virtually, each of you. I'm Clay Dube. I run the USC US-China Institute and am the lead instructor for the seminar. We'll also have presentations by other specialists. Xin Jiang and Yingjia Huang are the seminar managers. You've already been interacting with them. Don't hesitate to contact them at [email protected] with any questions that you may have.
I'm a China historian by training, but spend most of my time these days focused on contemporary issues, particularly those relating to the US-China relationship. I grew up in San Diego and taught at the secondary level there for a couple years, before going back to school and ending up teaching at Berea College and UCLA before coming to USC in 2006.

Hello all! My name is Delora Medina and I teach for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. My school is Horizon PAU, which is for Special Education students K-12. My classroom contains students ranging from K-3, who are considered ED (emotionally disturbed). I teach multiple subjects andy through Social Studies and Language Arts, have touched upon Asian topics at a minimal level. Hopefully through this seminar I will be able to incorporate more lessons about Asia. As a student, I have always enjoyed learning about other cultures but my background knowledge mostly centers around the Western world. I am very excited to start this new journey in learning about some of the Eastern cultures. I can't wait to meet everyone!
My name is Ed Ting. I'm a social studies teacher at Wilson High School (LAUSD), along with ltonglee! This is my 19th year in the classroom. This year I teach 9th grade geography/humanity, 10th grade World History, and 11th grade US history. I am first-gen. Chinese-American, born in Taiwan to mainland parents, and immigrated to the US when I was nine years old. I consider myself bilingual and bi-cultural. I've traveled to China, Taiwan, but nothing more than switching planes in Korea and Japan on the way to somewhere else. I have three kids attending PUSD. Looking forward to the seminars and meeting all of you.
Hello there, I am Niru Parmar and I teach English 10, AP English Language and AP English Literature. As an Indian-American I am of South Asian descent and have always been fascinated by this region of the world. Many of my high school students are also Asian. Most of the Asian students I teach are from the Philippines but many are from Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. As an English teacher I am most fascinated in learning about the historical context of literature from a particular region. I want to expose my students, particularly in AP English classes, to literature from around the world, including writers from Asia such as Haruki Murakami, Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Rabindranath Tagore. See you shortly.
Hello, I'm Steve Feng. I currently teach 12th grade language arts, AVID, and ASB. Next year I'll be teaching AP Language. I was born in Taipei and emigrated to this country when I was three years old. I've been in education now for almost 10 years. All of my teaching experience has been here in southern California. I'm looking forward to applying what I learn here in my classroom.
Hello! I'm Robert 'Bert' Nuranen. Sorry to be late with this introduction but my previous entry didn't connect. I am excited about this China Institute Seminar. In the not too distant future I plan to retire from LAUSD and desire to spend five years teaching in China or India or 5 years in each place. As a world history teacher I realize American youth - all Americans - are poorly informed as to Asia's massive impact on world cultures. I have taught in England under the Fulbright Teacher Exchange program and one year in Russia as an exchange teacher under the Freedom Support Act. A Michigan native "Yooper" I moved to California in 1976 and don't regret the move, but still keep a residence in the Upper Peninsula.

This is an important topic for a crucial time in history and am really glad I took advantage of this seminar. See you all soon!
Hi,
My name is Ruby. I am a Special Education teach for LACOE. My students are in grades 3rd-5th. It's an inclusion class and I teach all subjects. I hope to learn a lot from this seminar so that I can incorporate it into my lesson plans. Excited to meet everyone!
Hello everyone, my apologies for the late enrollment. My name is Marcos Andrade and I teach AP Government/Economics and Psychology/World Geograpgy at Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel. I have been at the school for twelve years and am always looking for more ways to make the coursework more relevant for students. With Gov/Econ, we do focus on the global interdependence of political and economic decisions. With the Geography class, there is an Asia unit and that is where I am trying to make the class more interesting. We have a huge Asian population and I would like to find resources and ideas to make my classes more interesting. Loolking forward to meeting you all on Monday.
