It was great to meet you all last Monday. I look forward to our next session, tomorrow. My name is Sara Rodrigues, and I am an 10th grade English teacher at Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley. I have been at my current school for 17 years, and I am always hungry for ways to offer my students a broader perspective of the world. See you all tomorrow
Hello everyone,
my name is Christa Heinrich-Josties. Currently, I am a World History and Economics teacher at Arcadia High School.
In my classes, I incorporate Asian history, culture, politics, and US China relations. I am excited about these topics and hope to get more information in this seminar.
See you all tomorrow.
Hi, Mary Fraser, here. My head is still spinning from all the exciting information we received yesterday at our marathon China Tour Seminar. The film we saw is also still haunting me. I loved the presentations by the previous China Tour participants and found them to be extremely helpful and they also eased alot of my concerns about what to bring, wear, and so on.
Hello All! I am Laura Martinez de Garcia. Currently, I teach at Learning Works Charter School in Pasadena with my cohort, Stacy Nichols. My students are all parenting and pregnant teens - most of my girls have at least one baby and are still working on finishing high school. The challenge in our school is student engagement. This is mostly true due to the transient nature of our "drop-outs" and to the nature of the program itself - an "independent" study program. Needless to say, sitting in a classroom is not a priority for our students. So, as teachers, we have to bring the history to them. Hopefully, being in this seminar will help me bring China's history into focus for my students in ways which make its vibrant history, its present and future, more interesting and relevant to their lives. My hope is that I will help the critical thinking process of my students reflect more on the value of China's presence by increasing their knowledge of its past.
I enjoyed the seminar and was bummed to have had to miss the last week; the highlights for me were seeing the Chinese philosophy debate modeled and the "Covering China" event down at USC. My perception of China was slightly altered as a result of the seminar....
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for participating in our 2012 Spring Pasadena East Asia Seminar! Our first session will begin on Monday, April 9, 2012 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM. We are still finalizing the location with Pasadena Unified School District and will notify you through email as soon as the venue is finalized. Please feel free to get acquainted with your fellow seminar participants in this thread by clicking on "add reply" at the top of this window. You can briefly describe your school, subjects that you currently teach, and your experiences with Asia (in your curriculum or personal experience).
Please remember to check this forum periodically for seminar updates. I will be posting the readings for each session under this thread once I receive them from the session speaker each week. After each session, I will create a new thread for each participant to share their thoughts on the presentation. A copy of the seminar requirements is also attached for your review.
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 213-740-1307 if you have any questions or concerns.
I look forward to meeting you on Monday, April 9th.
All the best,
Yingjia
