My name is Johana Cervantes. I have been teaching secondary for five years. This is the first year I teach at a continuation school. My current school is
Metropolitan Continuation High School. I teach basic Math and Biology. The last two years I have been teaching a unit about highly populated areas, such as Asia, and on many occasions’ questions about the culture in Asia surface. I felt that I needed a brief background in Asia in order to address some of these questions.October 12, 2012 at 3:26 pm #26953Anonymous
GuestHello everyone! My name is Zonia Hill-Richardson and I am currently assigned to Clinton MS. near USC. I teach 6 & 7 grade History & Science and 3 periods of art electives. My interest in the seminar is to learn more about Chinese culture from a different lense and transcend the miopic conceptions about what constitute China. I specially like the breathtaking landscapes with its towering mountains and the unique art traditions, application of techniques w/ink/paint brushes on silk and the varietyof art forms develop in Ancient China; pottery etc.

GuestMy name is Scott Finlay and I am a 6th grade teacher at Clinton Middle School near USC and I teach English and Ancient Civilizations. I was interested in this course as an Ancient Civ teacher and I have always been interested in Asian history and culture. I grew up in an area with few Asians and when I went to USC, I met a number of Asian friends and was introduced to some components of Asian culture. I also took a world religions course and focused heavily on Asian religions. I'm looking forward to becoming more entrenched in Asian culture through this course.

GuestMy name is Marilyn Watt. I teach English Language Arts to freshman, and World Religions to seniors at Downtown Magnets High School. I’ve taught for twenty years now, but I’m still excited to learn innovative teaching strategies, and to discover cultures different than my own, particularly Asia at this time, as the Asian population of my school has grown to 40% over the last three years! In my freshman classes, we focus a great deal on the theme of identity, reading stories that depict European, Hispanic, and Chinese cultures. I appreciate this opportunity to learn about East Asia; it will allow me to impart a depth of knowledge and background to the literature my student’s explore, and allow each Asian student a deeper understanding of themselves.
