I know there are a mess of music nerds out there, so I figured there should be a thread catering to them. I am going to throw out some stuff to see if there is any interest. I don't know too much about what's out there, so feel free to inform me and make recommendations. If someone wants to focus the discussion on a specific group, album, show listings, etc. help yourself. It simply shocked me that there was no place devoted to music on this website.

Japanese artists whose records I like, have liked, own, or have owned and would be willing to discuss include the Boredoms, Masonna, Melt Banana, Merzbow, Kyu Sakimoto, Carol, Yoko Ono, Ghost, Guitar Wolf, Triceratops, DJ Krush, Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, Cibo Matto, Shonen Knife, Boris, Plus-Tech Squeezebox, and GS I Love You Too: Japanese Garage Bands of the '60s

    Live Shows-
I saw the group Afrirampo at the smell recently. Yoko Ono and Merzbow are playing Arthurfest [summer '05].

Here are some pretty cool informational sites for Japanese music (mostly rock-oriented):

I'm glad to read that there are people out there interested in all kinds of cool music. I was in Japan last spring break and I got a little into the Jpop scene (if I had more time I would've gotten way into it). I found this great band, Go!Go! 7188, while I was there and now I can't get enough of them. I wish I had purchased more of their albums when I was there. I even played them for my 7th grade students and the ones who knew how to rock'n'roll were really into it (even though they had no idea what was being said, they loved the music). Thank you for your suggestions and I will definitely be checking out those websites.

There are a ton of Japanese music that has very sweet sounds...My personal favorites are Oreskaband and Orange Range. These two bands are pretty popular and they're ska and indie rock. I played Oreskaband for my class every so often and my kids love the ska sound.
