    Militarism and Religion/Philosophy:
    Compare and Contrast the influences of the two through history up to present day in China and Japan.

    Objective: Having completed our Medieval unit on Japan and China the students as well as a compare and contrast/research web-quest paper on religion vs philosophy (Shinto, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism) the students will be able to look at/search for resources to compare the use of military and religion/philosophy in establishing a culture.

    Standards:
    History/Social Science: 7.3, 7.5 (including information from each substandard) 10.3.6, 10.4, 10.6.6, 10.9.4, 10.10.1, 10,10.3
    Language Arts: R7.2.2, W7.1.0 (all), W7.2.3, LS7.2.3

    *Small Groups

    Bell Work Question/Discussion: How do the events and influences of our lives shape who we become?
    Does this same process apply to a country?

    Use a cause and effect of column process to diagram events/adoptions of beliefs, institutions of law, kind of government…
    Look at:
    · Architecture
    · Literature
    · Art
    · Music
    · Laws/ Freedoms
    · “World” interaction/involvement

    Culminating Activity: Create a power point presentation, poster, brochure, artifact suitcase… to demonstrate your knowledge of the differences of the impact of
    military and religion/philosophy in establishing today’s Chinese and Japanese cultures. You will be responsible for presenting your findings to the class as well as explaining your choice of presentation medium.
