I can't seem to find the link for the November 15th lecture -- am truly fascinated by the Soong (sp?) sisters -- their connection to early 20th century Chinese history is amazing as the three sisters were from one family! I saw a film (from Netflix) several years ago -- not a great film - but it portrayed each sister's choice in terms of husbands and desire to remain on mainland China after 1949. The sisters appeared to have one foot in the western world and the other never left the eastern world.

    Hello everyone,

Welcome to the web discussion forum for the USCI/NCTA Fall 2011 "East Asia and the United States" seminar at UTLA!

This is a space in which we can all get acquainted prior to the seminar. To that end, it would be great if you can reply to this post and provide the following:

    1. Your name
    2. Your school and teaching assignment
    3. A photo (if you so desire; see attached "Using the Web Forum Guide" for detailed instructions)
    4. Anything else about yourself that you would like to share

We will be posting information relevant to the seminar here, so please check in regularly. Also, for the ease and convenience of all forum users, please limit the number of new threads you create. If something can be shared, discussed or expanded upon under an existing thread, let's do so.

Thank you for your consideration, and welcome to the forum!

    Hello all!!

My name is Benjamin De Leon and here is a little bit about me:

    • I currently teach Modern World History and Honors Modern World History at West Adams Preparatory High School in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles (in between Koreatown and South Los Angeles). I have previously taught Government/Economics, U.S. History, and three electives: Business Management/Entrepreneurial Studies, Sociology, and Media Studies.
    • I am very excited about this class. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled around Asia. A couple of years ago I traveled to Korea on a study trip through the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Korea Foundation. When the program ended, I extended my stay in Asia for an extra week and half, hopping on over to Japan. This past summer I traveled to the Philippines and Thailand. Each of these trips and experiences have been utterly incredible and have added to my life - both personally and professionally - in so many ways. I hope to learn much from this seminar (I already am!) and bring back to my classroom all of the new information and knowledge that I am learning.

    Cheers!
