Hi, my name is Robin Winkler. I'm one of the "Granada Four", the group of four geography teachers from Granada Hills Charter High School that are taking the seminar together. My degree is in geography, but the majority of classes I have taught until recently have been economics. Recently our school instituted an introductory world geography course in the 9th grade and our group has had the privilege of developing the curriculum. We heard about this seminar and thought it would be perfect to learn new information and to develop lessons about the region of east Asia.

Although my degree is in geography, I had seen very little of the world that I am supposed to teach about. So two years ago I decided to pursue opportunities to travel to various regions so I could relay first-hand knowledge to my students. In December of 2009 I had the opportunity to travel with other teachers to Israel and last July to South Africa. The experience of seeing other countries and cultures in invaluable.

I look forward to learning and growing as a teacher in this seminar and to working along with all of you.

    Hello everyone,
My name is Ron Korb and I am a teacher at Granada Hills Charter High School. I am currently teaching Geography and US History. I have been teaching about 6 years or so having been involved in the restaurant/bar industry previously. I have really enjoyed my time teaching so far and look forward to learning as much as possible about East Asia.
I am logging as many miles a week as I can on my bike (there are a series of duathlons this spring and summer) and starting to run (slowly). I have travelled extensively in Europe and enjoyed the experience and look forward future trips to Asia.

Hi, everyone, it is so nice to meet all of you at this wonderful seminar. Here is something about myself.
My name is Lijie Ding, and I am an RPS teacher in May wood Academy high School. As a born Chinese, I came to USA 10 years ago. I started my teaching after I did couples of tests and 2 years study in Calstate ,LA in 2006. In my school, I am the only Chinese teacher. My students are very curious about China. They want to know something about it. They often ask me if Tokyo is the capital of China or not, also they want to learn some Chinese such as how to say numbers, happy birthday and ask me to talk about Chinese food. So I started a Chinese Club. But I want to teach them more about China.Since I've been away from China for 10 years, so I think I am not very knowledgeable about the the present China. Apart from that, I would like to hear what other people think about China. Therefore, I came to this seminar and I am looking forward to learn more from Prof. Clay and all the other friends. Thank you.

    Hello everyone,

Welcome to the web discussion forum for the USCI/NCTA Spring 2011 "East Asia Since 1800" seminar at UTLA!

This is a space in which we can all get acquainted prior to the seminar. To that end, it would be great if you can reply to this post and provide the following:

    1. Your name
    2. Your school and teaching assignment
    3. A photo (if you so desire; see attached "Using the Web Forum Guide" for detailed instructions)
    4. Anything else about yourself that you would like to share

We will be posting information relevant to the seminar here, so please check in regularly. Also, for the ease and convenience of all forum users, please limit the number of new threads you create. If something can be shared, discussed or expanded upon under an existing thread, let's do so.

Thank you for your consideration, and welcome to the forum!
