    Hi Folks,
Just a reminder -- the Library Grant form / Credit form needs to be submitted with your materials on or before Jan. 9. Please take a careful look at the preselected packages. I think many of you will find one of them addresses the topics you're likely to teach about. It's easy for you and for us to ship it off to you as soon as we certify that you've met the seminar requirements.

    Hi everyone,

Attached are the library grant guidelines for your information.

For those of you requesting a pre-selected library grant package, the hyperlinks in the library grant package lists are active, so you can browse the materials online at length to see which package works best for you.

    Mr. Dube:

Please read my recent postings where I discuss in some detail Ms Ko's and your invidious behavior toward me last Saturday.

I am still upset over the disrespectful incidents [note plural], I had to endure in front of the entire class of my colleagues.

I would never in a million years go on a Far Easterh sojourn or anywhere with either you or Ms Ko.

    Miranda,
If I understand correctly, it "would" be possible to "substitute" one text for another in the standardized package. Is that correct?
I ask because I would like to include a copy of Ban Zhao(Zhao Ban?) and Lessons for Women. If the substitution is not a possibility, I guess that I could assemble a package as an alternative.

    Hi everyone,

I'm afraid we cannot substitute items in the library grant packages. You are welcome to use the lists, however, as a guideline for a customized package and include other items that would be useful for you.

    Miranda,

I am in receipt of your email response to my question about substituting books in the pre-selected packages(not possible). Thank you for your response and the clarification.

Because of the time constraints and the fact that we are on Christmas Break(all school staff, including the librarian), I will simply go with the standard high school literature package. I believe I now have all aspects of the written follow-up completed, and I will hope to post everything to you within the next day or two(post office access being the consideration).

Thank you again for your response.

    Hi!

I LOVE the Ebrey book. Anyone have any opinions as to what the reading level for that would be?

I would guess my 9th graders could handle it, but I'd appreciate other viewpoints.

    Best,

    Becca

So what package is best for the 6th Grade Ancient Civilization material? We start with The Shang Dynasty, 3 Chinese Philosophies, First Emperor, Han Dynasty and end with the Silk Road. If no one has any suggestions I could share the resources with 7th grade because they cover all of the material outside of what I named. What are the other 6th Grade or Middle School packages are teachers requesting?

    Hi!

I was poking around looking for material to include in the library grant list, and ran across this:

The Mongols: Past To Present -- A Suggested Reading List

Any thoughts on the materials included?

I would like a focused set of materials that would support an essay topic.

    Best,

    Becca

I was a little confused between the 300$ library grant and 200$ East Asian Reference and Teaching Materials.

    Becca,
I am going to use portions of the " Chinese Civilizations" book for my 6th and 7th grade ESL students. Some of the sources are in small chunks, 1-2 pages, and are easier to comprehend. I sound confident now, but i'll let you know how it works.

Thanks for the tip of looking for books that our EL Students will benefit from reading - especially like you suggested 'in chunks'. I am going to taylor a package by looking on the internet to find appropriate materials for middle schoolers (sixth grade). Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi Folks,
The $200 mentioned in our advertising for the seminar refers to the stuff we've already given you (books, a subscription to Education About Asia, the reader). The $300 grant that Miranda's provided a handout for refers to materials that you earn for your school by completing all seminar requirements. Again, I highly encourage you to go with one of the preselected packets.

I agree - I think that there are many selections in the Ebrey collection of translated primary source materials that 7-9th graders could handle. And there are many that befuddle university undergrads.... The trick, as always, is to select materials judiciously.

Please don't forget that Patricia Ebrey also oversaw the creation of a wonderful website -- a visual sourcebook of Chinese civilization. See it at:
    http://depts.washington.edu/chinaciv/contents.htm

BTW -- to make links hot, the trick is to click on the "link" icon (it looks like a link in a chain). That will open a little dialogue box. You can name the link (e.g., visual sourcebook) or leave it blank so that readers can see the full address.

I am glad that you put together a library package based on grade level (middle school/high school), and subject matter (history/language arts), because I wouldn't begin to know what text to turn to. This is definitily a great start. Later, through further reading I will be able to make suggestion to my school library to build a larger section on East Asia.
