One of my friends suggested me to watch "To Live" to know about the mediveal China & i am really thankful to her.
The story of movie revolves about a prominent family .Master director Zhang has created a domestic drama on epic scale & choosen to view historic events through the lens of a nuclear family of Fugui & Ziazhen.Fugui loves gambling .He chastised by wife & family for gambling .one day wife left him ,gave birth to son but came back to give him a second chance.Fugui became a traveling puppeteer .During one show in night he recruited by national army to fight communist .During his military services he matures & gains a new perspective of life.He returns & With the long suffering Ziazhen, he struggles to hold his family together through the years of social turmoil.The couple grows older together.In a most complex emotional strength their hearing impaired daughter is betrothed to a crippled soldier.
All yhe characters are powerfully developed ,following good times ,bad times. Zhang has such a skill that we became a participant rather than a observer.Zhang manages a wonderful balance of drama ,melodrama & comedy.Film is taking a full tour of communist civil -war ,great leap forward , & cultural revolution very intricately.To Live has recognizable story ,real characters ,one family,s struggle against a country torn by civil strife over a period of 30 years.
To Live depicts the triumph of human spirit as the ability to preserve under the most difficult conditions.Through all the struggles ,hardships & moments of rare magic & joy the characters continue their lives & that only Zhang want to convey.
