Hoffmann, Fritz. Tourist poses for a yak-back portrait. Photograph. National Geographic: 1.

The May 2008 issue of National Geographic magazine that is devoted to China is necessary to purchase. I could not pass the first page without thinking about the China 2007 field study trip. The bottom of this page has a photograph of a tourist riding a yak in China at Qinghai Lake. She might have been embarrassed since she is covering her face while riding the yak and wearing a borrowed Chinese rob and headpiece. Those of us who went on the field study trip remember Rosemary’s experience riding a yak and searching for a tail. This photograph is a fond memory.

I was amazed to see the pictures of the new high speed rail line linking Tibet with the rest of China in this issue of National Geographic. It is difficult to predict of imagine the possible changes technology and modernization will bring to such a historical place.
