For this make up assignment I visited the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. The Museum was founded in 1971 and according to its guide is the only Museum in Southern California “devoted solely to Asia and the Pacific”. The museums mission if to “foster cultural understanding through the arts”. The two exhibits that I found most interesting were “Confucius: Shaping Values Through Art” and “The Silk Road”.

There were several rooms containing many different Chinese artifacts and artwork. Most of them were from the Qing Dynasty. The room dedicated to Confucius was an exhibit unto itself. This exhibition gives a visual representation of Confucian ideas throughout Chinese history. It also contains information on the walls about different Confucian values such as filial piety, and the importance of having virtuous rulers and administrators. There are also several Confucian texts and calligraphic artwork.

The other exhibit I thought could be useful for my students was the exhibit on the Silk Road. This exhibit seemed much more appropriate for middle school studens; the Confucius exhibit might be a little too complicated for them to grasp entirely. The description of the artifacts was written in much more student friendly language. The museum also is sponsoring a “Silk Road Student Essay Contest”. Students can enter their essays based on the observation of the exhibit and research on the topic. It is too late to schedule a field trip this year, but if they have it again next year, I would defiantly consider returning with my students.

I went to Pacific Asia Museum on my own and then took my student to the museum. It was an amazing place, from the architecture design of the museum building plus its courtyard to its collection as well as special exhibitions. It is one of the three art museums in USA dedicated to Asian arts. You will see phenomenal collections from Tibet, India, and Pacific Asia apart from East Asian regions. The Pacific Asia Museum website is worth visiting also. Some previous exhibitions were posted on the museum website (I mentioned in my another post-Middle School Class Ideas) as well as education resources for educators. The museum also offer art workshop to students on weekdays and holds talks/workshop/forums for family/young learners during weekends.

Here is the website of Pacific Asia Museum: http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/ (if you are interested, I am the member of this museum and I would like to post interesting programs sponsored by Pacific Asia Museum)http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/">http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/
