One book you might be interested to read, that should be considered a classic and I absolutely loved in high school was "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan. Being able to revisit reading this as an adult has made it more valid to me because I can see things in a maturer light and notice more of the historical significance of the events in the book, such as the terrible war and conditions in China that led to many Chinese refugees and immigrants struggling to survive and make it to America to provide a better life for their children. There are also many cultural differences between the East and the West that are contrasted in the book and have a significant way of being highlighted through the relationships between the Chinese immigrant parents and their American-raised children.

This is about the generation gaps between the first and second generation of Chinese immigrants and their children who were born and raised in America. There is also an excellent movie that you can use as a supplement to the student's learning.
