I had the pleasure of watching the Korean Drama television series, "My Lovely Samsoon", which is directly translated, "My Name is Kim Samsoon" from the original Korean title. It is subtitled, but there are some instances where you hear them speak in English, or at least, you hear Samsoon, the main character, try to speak English, but has a sorry attempt at it. It is like a Bridget Jones Diary-type plot in which an older woman, who just turned 30 has just broken up with her boyfriend who manipulated and dumped her for another woman.
In Korean culture, women must get married young in their early 20s and it is considered a disgrace if they do not marry and have their own family. In a male dominated society, spunky, single, independent women like Kim Samsoon are not looked upon as the ideal respectable woman. Samsoon is an aspiring pastry chef who has a gift for baking and realizes that through finding a new job and a new, younger, womanizing boss, she finds her true identity and becomes liberated and gains a new self-confidence in herself, while also finding love unexpectedly and in an unconventional way.
This movie goes against all the stigmas of Korean culture. It is definitely an out-of-the-box drama/comedy that gives you an insight to Korean society that you don't normally see.
The director's name is Kim, Yoon Chul
