Teaching about East Asia has always been difficult for me. I admit that my own knowledge is very limited, therefore I tend to teach only the "surface" of what I am required to. However, I realize that I am doing a disservice to my students. By not educating myself and delving deeper in the "asian" curriculum, I am adding to this "ignorance." Asia is a very powerful and advanced nation and it would behoove my students to recieve as much history and information about it.

To add you the question you have posed several times about the importance of East Asia, I would like to add that whether we study and learn from them, they continue to influence as well as become a greater part of our lives. This afternoon, the Korean Parent Association is putting on a luncheon for the faculty at our school, complete with speakers, cultural examples, and Korean food. So, I guess we can be proactive and learn what we can, or we can be swept along as the East Asian influence increases.

I think in East Asia, China is a big country with a long history. With the development of China and its influence on the countries nearby, people start to see that China is going to play an important role in the world.

I believe we should spend our precious little allotted time teaching our students as much as we can about as much as we can. It would certainly seem ridiculous to not talk about a topic just because the textbook only devotes 2 pages to it. I feel that my students need to understand what was going on in the world yesterday to understand what is going on in the world today but sometines even I am confused as to what is going on!) I admit that Asian history is a weak link except when it intersects with US history. I have learned so much about Asia through this seminar and I'm glad I signed up!

Why do you think precious energy and class time should be allocated to the study of East Asian societies and cultures?

All this seminar has concluded, it make more sense to me why Professor Dube covered the 4 Chinese Philosophers at the very first session along with Geography and other vital information of China. Confucianism influences was all over the East Asian Countries, which I have never realized the importance as much as now. It would be also nice to include the part of ancient Chinese history of 770BC to 221BC (Unification), which was more like 1600AD in Japan. Students will be able to comprehend the reasons why 100s of philosophers appeared at the same time.
