KeymasterToday I saw the film "Mongol" at The Landmark theatre, Westside Pavilion. The film opens with the childhood story of Genghis Khan, born Temudgin. At the age of maybe 8 or 9, he travels with his father to pick a wife from another clan. When they stop by to visit a friend of his father's he meets the young girl who will eventually become his wife. During the trip home, an experience at a rest stop presents an opportunity for his father to teach Temudgin a life lesson to always value the rule of law; that Mongolians must always follow the established laws no matter what the sacrifice. This is a memorable lesson for Temudgin, one that guides his destiny to unite all Mongolians under one Khan. His destiny takes many detours as Temudgin makes many friends and enemies. He is later united with his bride from childhood who complements his own character, however she clearly has her own distinct character throughout the film. They face challenges together, which usually result in their involuntary separation, but they always find their way back to each other. Their love story is anything but average. The film deals with the complex nature of human relationships, and law and order in Mongolian society.
I highly recommend seeing this first installment of the trilogy.

GuestI thought the film was great. However, I think my expectations were extremely high: since the film was nominated for best foreign film, I expected something at the level of Braveheart or Gladiator.
I felt at times, the film felt disjointed. There were about 4 moments when the film would just dissolve into black - almost the feeling that the filmmakers werent sure what to do next.
For example, I thought one of the weakest points of the film was when the young Temujin goes to the rocks and asks for help from his god, and all of a sudden the wood on his shoulders shatters? Also, how did he crawl out of the freezing cold water when the ice shattered below his feet and he fell in?
Was he really able to unite the Mongols because during the decisive battle, everyone cowered in fear because of the thunder?
I liked the movie. But I guess wanted it to be so much better!!
